CRUFTS 2018 – 40th years Agility

It is the green carpet and it is it so for now the 40th year. This was my second time competing at CRUFTS and it was as exciting as it was the first time. This years CRUFTS was special in many ways. It is the year where Agility celebrates its 40th anniversary.

After last years success with Cute – remember we won both qualification runs, therefore the combined results too and afterwards the final in the evening and went CRUFTS International Champions – I could go relatively relaxed to Birmingham as I knew I’ve won everything which is possible at this event and that I made agility history together with Cute.

It’s still a long way to go from Berne (CH) all the way thru Luxemburg and Belgium to Birmingham (UK). 2535.2km to be exactly. Some would call this ridiculous or freaky. Yes, it might be freaky to drive so far. But hey, it is not just a competition, it is CRUFTS! If you haven’t been competing there on the green carpet or at least haven’t been there as a spectator in this gorgeous main arena, you can’t imagine even in your wildest dreams how the atmosphere is, how it has to be standing there and running with that crowed of nearly 10’000 spectators in your back. CRUFTS is something special and something unique in this world of Agility.

Show and Exhibition

We’ve arrived on Thursday night at our hotel. Therefore, we had the whole Friday to watch the show and exhibitation. Let’s simply say, it was shopping time 🙂 Since Cute loves plush toys, I bought her a plush crocodile. No one could be more proud carrying a plush toy the whole day around like Cute.

The exhibition is really huge. 5 halls fully packed with stands displaying toys, treats, food, grooming stuff, souveniers, clothes and much, much more.

The main arena holds the big shows. The day is filled with a varied show program from Agility, to Flyball, to Healwork to Music Freestyle over different displays like the Golden Retriever, West Midlands Police or the Royal Air Force display through to the various best in breed shows. And the best: On each single screen in the main arena’s lobby they played Cute runs throughout the day. This made me proud 🙂
And believe me or not, as soons as it’s time for the Golden Retriever display and you’re not having your seat yet… ouuuu, then you’re definitely to late to get into the main arena. All nearly 10’000 seats are from this point onwards til the end of the day program entirely occupied. People in front of the main arena are queuing up for 2 hours to get in. This just to get an imagination about the scale of this outstanding show.

Competition

I was aware it won’t get easy to take up with last years amazing success. Nevertheless, we tried our best. Saturday morning started with the qualification jumping. Extraordinary long distances between two obstacles followed by extraordinary short distances, this sums it up best. And on top of this a spurred by the crowed, exploding Cute. I never ever expierenced her like in this first run. She really exploded out of energy. In the first part of the course she went so wide between jump 3 and 4 that I was afraid she wouldn’t catch the weave entry anymore. So I had to improvise while putting up loosing the ideal line. Anyway, we finished the course with one fault which we got right on the third last jump. But still, 8 years old Cute managed the course without having an ideal line in 33.829, just 0.01 behind the winner Lilli.

Likewise, the followed agility run (second qualification run) had the same style. Extreme long/short distances (haven’t meassured it, but it was around 10 or more meters the longest and 4 the shortest) pattern in it. This is what makes it so difficult for us Europeans to handle it, as we are simply not used to it. Anyway, the agility was a good run and we handlet it nicely. Cute was still boosted with energy and this still made her nearly uncontrollable. After seesaw, I had to put so much energy and effort to collect her and get her back on track, that I was afterwards simply to late to help her finding the weaves. Awk…. refusale! 🙁 I hate being late!

But after all we showed solid agility and with a 10th place in the overall ranking we managed it to get into the final. Definitely pretty happy about that. The motto for the final couldn’t be anything else than “all or nothing”.
Really nice, european style course setup by Jackie Gardner. Thus I looked forward to run this one. Cute was again herself, still with lots of energy but way more controllable than in the previous runs. You know, the worst which can happen in agility is to knock the first bar. Sadly this happened to us… 🙁 Realizing the dropped bar I speeded up as much as we can, knowing to risk another fault. But at least we run the second best time (with our 2o2o contacts) and would have placed second!

In conclusion, I couldn’t fully tie on last years success. But that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud we reached the final, about the shown agility and about my super trouper Cute. She was in top shape as I never experienced her before. CRUFTS is and will be the top-notch in Agility.

At this point thank you very much Fabienne for looking at me and Cute. You’re the best groomer 🙂 Thank to all the support and good luck wishes I got from the lovely people standing behind me. You all are my motivation. Jenny and Nettan, it was so much fun the whole weekend with you.
And of course a huge thank you to Doggie Solutions for not sponsoring me, but for sponsoring the Agility International at CRUFTS and thus making it possible for us to be part of this most amazing event on earth! And last but not least to the organizers and all the volunteers. You all did an amazing job!

40th anniversary

This CRUFTS was special in any means. 1977, Peter Meanwell got asked to organize something to make the show program more attractive to the audience. And he invented Agility. It was at CRUFTS, 40 years ago, when Agility was first shown to the public. And from there it conquered every part of the world. It is amazing how far this sport came in the last 40 years!
Now you know, why the video starts with a short flashback to how Agility was born and started at CRUFTS. Lets celebrate this throughout 2018!

CRUFTS 2017 – the green carpet

Wow… the green carpet! What an impressive arena, what an impressive show, what an impressive atmosphere! Never experienced anything comparable like standing, running, and winning in the arena of CRUFTS.

The day I got the envelope with that UK airmail stamp on it was so electrifying. Holding those tickets in my hand, the tickets for the green carpet! A dream cam true… But this meant on the other side I had to postpone one of my agility seminars (folks, I’m still sorry for that!) and I have to train with Cute at 65cm (KC standard for large). Things said, we started our training 3 weeks before Crufts, once a week. I was happy to see Cute handle those extra 5cm very well. And so we started our journey towards England with confidence.

It is a looong, damn long journey to drive to Birmingham. It brought me along France to Luxemburg (for a cheap refuelling stop 😉 yayyy… ), along Belgium back to France, Calais where we had to catch the Eurotunnel Shuttle on time. On our way to Calais, things looked to get rough, as I got an email from the hotel which said they didn’t take pets anymore. FFS! Really?! This just came them in mind a couple hours before I’d like to check-in? Oukey… driving (we had to catch the 11 o’clock train!) and searching TripAdvisor for a new hotel for the first night.

Friday I got there for the first time – the NEC Birmingham. It’s huge and spacious. The main arena of the National Exhibition Center is at the far end, right after the benching area. Glad I had Friday to get familiar with the surrounding area, while watching and cheering some of the UK’s top handlers. For me it was a fun day with friends and it was the calm before the storm.

Finally Saturday and the big moment has arrived. We had to get up early (2 hour drive to NEC) to be there in time. You never know how the traffic looks like in the UK. Even I got up at 7am, 3.5 hours before the event was expected to start, I arrived to the minute 🙂 It was enough time left to study the course map and get us installed.

First was the jumping qualifier judged by Alan Bray. It was a fast and fluid course, with nice european-like distances. I knew if I want to go to the final, this would be our run. Then I had this funny but stupid thought in my mind, to which I saw me and Cute as a sort of dinosaur with our 2o2o 😀 Preparing backstage behind the Crufts curtain made it even more exciting, hearing the other handlers running, and the audience cheering. At a time the hostess called us, as we run as 12th, to stand ready. I entered with Cute for the first time the arena. Moving lights everywhere, almost each single seat taken, the speaker announcing us over the loudspeakers, the audience cheering… what a great atmosphere. Too bad I haven’t receive much of it, as I was too busy being nervous anyway 😀
Cute showed a phenomenal run and run straight to the 1st place! Woohoooo!!! I was so happy, seeing “Rank 1” light up at the big cube.

Well, the day wasn’t over yet. And we had to get another clear round. At least no DIS! After lunch it was the agility qualifier’s turn. It was judged by Bill Glover. While studying again the new course map, we had time to enjoy “Heelwork to Music – Freestyle” in the main arena. Meanwhile every last seat was taken in the main arena and in front of it a long line.

This time again Cute and I had a starting place in the middle of the starter field. We both did our job. After jump 13, Cute made a much wider turn than expected, thus the line to the seesaw got a bit messy. Just in the very last moment I managed it with her very great support to get right on the seesaw. The judge Bill Glover has had a real eagle eye seeing it correctly. Hats off! And so we got our second 1st place! What a dream! Tremendous performance from Cute. I was already at that time the happiest man… but things would get even better.

In the evening the final took place. The line in front of the arena got even longer (it went through 1.5 exhibition halls) Crazy! But I liked it 🙂 The final, a agility run, was judged again by Alan Bray. Since the long jump is wider and higher in the UK and we had to do a sharp turn so the dog won’t go into the wrong tunnel entry, I was a bit concerned. As we know now, I hadn’t to 🙂 It was so special to run as the last competitor, leading the board at the time. The crowed cheering and all eyes on Cute and the time. I had to do one last wrap and then 3 jumps straight to the finish. “Don’t mess it up Simon!”, I thought. Cute jumped into my arms I had a look back to the big cube and couldn’t believe my eyes. I needed a second look, but it was the truth and the speaker confirmed it loud and clearly. RANK 1 light up again for the third time today. Cute won the CRUFTS International! Happy, happy, haaaappy!!!

It’s a bit of Agility history, since we’re the first Swiss Team winning this trophy and even better winning both heats (jumping & agility qualifier) and the final! Now I was really (and I’m still be) the happiest man on earth!

Crufts is a tremendous event, having more than 22’000 dogs and more than 160’000 visitor in its 4 days. The main arena fully sold out with its 6000 seats! And it is even more tremendous to compete and to win at a such spectacular and meaningful event.

I say thanks to all and each made this possible and supported me before and throughout the event and celebrated with us. BUT the biggest and loveliest thanks and the warmest hug goes to my very special once in a live time dog CUTE!

I’m so happy Cute & I got invited to @crufts

YouTube Livestream (Tag 3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNlMlSCKkXI
